I have been quite busy this year.

From finishing the first draft of my novella Kaja to trying to market Losing Air, I’ve had a lot going on lately.

So, I figured it was a great time to add a brand-new commitment to my plate!

Some time ago, I had one of those shower ideas. I was reading Of Blood and Fire, which had me thinking of the Hero’s Journey, and how prevalent and oft-repeated it is in most fantasy (not complaining, The Inheritance Cycle is my favorite series of all time). But that train of thought led me to an idea: an anti-hero’s journey.

Not the journey of an antihero, but a flipped take on the classic archetype. I thought, how funny would it be if we took just some guy who loved his life as a farmer and threw him into a classic fantasy adventure, of which he wants absolutely no part? I’m not just talking the typical “reluctant hero” trope, I mean that this guy, throughout the entire narrative, is doing everything he can to escape the quest in which he’s found himself and get back to his one and only passion: farming potatoes.

Just thinking of some of the scenes in my head got me laughing on the drive to work that day. Now, I honestly still don’t know if I’m actually funny or if my friends just give me pity laughs when I think I’m being funny. But I thought trying to write something completely unserious, totally lighthearted and with no stakes would be a fun escape from the nightmare in which we find ourselves lately.

At first this was just another novel idea, and on our drive to Spokane for Get Lit! 2026, I pitched it to Saige. She thought it sounded super fun, and she made a suggestion that changed everything.

“That would be fun to release as, like, a free web serial.”

I think you can probably guess where I’m going with this.

Introducing The Adventures of Lance Nobleblood: An Anti-Hero’s Journey!

That’s right boys, I made a whole ass website. It may look like it was coded by someone whose only experience in web design was creating their MySpace page (it was, that’s beside the point), but it was super fun to make and I’m very excited for this new project.

The Adventures of Lance Nobleblood will be released one chapter at a time, with each new chapter dropping every Friday starting this week (7/3). What’s fun and a little nerve-wracking is that I’m writing as I release it (with a five-week buffer in case of life, of course), so I don’t already have the full thing written as it’s coming out. I’m going to be just as surprised as my readers!

This satire-fantasy will be completely free to read. There is an option to subscribe, which simply emails you when each new chapter drops so you don’t forget. I have a few ideas for a little gift for the loyal followers of the story. I’ll solidify and announce that once the whole thing is finished and out. I have no idea how long it’ll end up: it might only equate to a novella-length story, or it could go on for years. My roughest guess is that this project will come out over the course of at least a few months.

Monthly Writing Goals Update

June Total: 27,409 / 20,000 words

What a weird month. I started out hating everything I wrote and unable to find the motivation to work on any of my novel projects. While most of those 27,000 words went into a secret fall project I’m working on, I still feel accomplished and optimistic. After all, most of my emotional energy this month was spent sending out a big batch of query letters and indie publisher submissions. That’s work, too!

Once we get closer to the right time of year, I’ll have the announcement for you guys about that secret project. Stay tuned!
